Built
in 1896 on a site known locally as 'the smugglers'
glen'. The name translates from gaelic as “The
little dark hill”. The distillery is located
in the central region of Speyside and was one of several
to be built along the Strathspey railway line. Water
is sourced from the Tamdhu burn and the distillery
has 6 stills (3 pairs). Tamdhu is the only distillery
in Speyside to malt all its own barley on-premise.
Through a Saladin Box system introduced in 1951 it
produces large amounts of malted barley which supplies
the entire malt requirement of the distillery and
enough to supply other distilleries (including Golden
Promise for The Macallan). Today the Tamdhu distillery
remains the sole distillery in Scotland with this
system. Held in high regard by blenders Tamdhu is
a malt within Famous Grouse J&B and Cutty Sark
blend. Tamdhu was not released as a Single Malt until
1976. The whisky style is lightbodied, soft and pale,
displaying gentle spicy sweet and toffee notes. It
is well balanced and hints a faint smoky finish. |
