Rosebank
was the most revered of all Lowland malts. There are
conflicting references to the distillery origins as
the first record of distilling was in 1798. Official
records for Rosebank show it was founded in 1842 by
James Rankine. Rosebank was referred to, as the ‘Falkirk
distillery’. The distillery was located at Camelon,
a village just north of Falkirk and between Glasgow
and Edinburgh on the banks of the Forth-Clyde Canal.
The water used was sourced from a reservoir in Carron
Valley.
Rosebank utilised the traditional triple distillation
method with one wash still and two spirit stills.
This produced a light, aromatic whisky with a style
most suited as an aperitif. Rosebank whispered a pretty
floral character with perhaps a suggestion of clover
and a hint of fruit. The last owners of Rosebank Distillery
were United Distillers who closed it down in 1993.
It was converted to a restaurant.
