Established
in 1772, the Littlemill distillery is considered to
be perhaps the oldest distillery in Scotland –
especially as recent evidence points to distilling
in1750. It sources its water from the Kilpatrick Hill
springs and like the Rosebank distillery it is located
near the Forth-Clyde Canal - close to the Auchentoshan
distillery between Glasgow and Dumbarton. Following
the Lowland tradition, Littlemill was triple-distilled
until the 1930s when it switched to double-distillation
and a Saladin Box system of malting. The double ventilation
towers over a single drying kiln remain a one-off
in Scotland.
